While I have seen a lot of reports of really bad battery life on the iPhone 4S with iOS5 I haven’t seen many articles about battery issues on the iPhone 4. I have had some major battery issues since my upgrade, unplugging my fully charged iPhone 4 at 8:30am not using it through the day it usually ends up at about 12% charge left at 6:30pm.

I came across an apple forum post that may or may not help, I just disabled this feature today.

I upgraded my ipone 4 to ios5 and had the same issue. I did the same thing everybody did and turned all the cool fetures off, I even went to apple. I could litterally watch the batter drop. I started looking again and found a new feature on ios 5 called diagnostics & usage under settings, general, about. If you click on it and changed to don’t send rather than automatic send your battery life will be back to normal. I looked up the reoports it was sending down where it says diagnostic & usage data, and found my phone was sending out around 200 reports a day back to apple. This is what was draining my battery and most likely yours too. Apple uses this to help diagnose problems with the ios and apps. Good Luck!

Thought I would repost it here as I had a hard time finding it in the first place.

I had around 2,600 images on my iPhone that wouldn’t delete via iPhoto or from within iTunes when I would select NOT to sync images. After doing a bit of research I came across some information on how to remove them with out going through your camera roll one-by-one. I outlined the steps below.

Connected my iPhone to my Macbook

Opened Image Capture and selected my iPhone from the device list

Selected all of the images shown (Command+A).

Click the delete button at the bottom of the Image Capture window

Sit back, it takes a while to clear off the images

And thats that. You can monitor the camera roll on your phone or the image count within the Image Capture app to follow the progress.

So yesterday Apple had their event where everyone assumed that they would release the new iPhone 5…. well they only came out with the iPhone 4S, which while many seemed upset and disappointed by this move it really only seemed natural. When you look at how well the iPhone 3G did it was only logical to ride that wave a little longer and put out the 3GS, which did amazing as well.

After hearing the specs of the iPhone 4S I really want to get one. It comes with better talk time, better camera, as well as what really got me the A5 processor. Since owning an iPad2 I have noticed that when using my iPhone 4 it seems slower than I once though, only when compared to the device using an A5. Another awesome feature is Siri, I have attached a video of the Siri demo which is just amazing.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4D4kRbEdJw]

What are your thoughts? Will you be getting an iPhone 4S or will you be waiting for the iPhone 5?

In the past installing AirVideo server on an Ubuntu system was somewhat of a pain, and an all around hack. Upon my recent purchase of an iPad I really wanted to get AirVideo working again. So after a little search and thinking that it was going to be a hack job again, I came across a package that someone had created to get this installed.

You can find the PPA information needed to install AirVideo here. Using the PPA installing was a breeze and I now have AirVideo setup and streaming to my iPad, iPhone and soon to Kats iTouch.

You can find the startup script here and there is also some other great information covered little more in depth here.

I have been debating on getting an iPad since the first one came out. It has always been one of those things where I kept putting it off due to it lacking this feature or that feature. I also had a lot of issues with the whole device being more of an over priced gaming tablet, but none the less I have kept my eye on them and have been reading up on it.
Over the weekend I finally broke down and bought Kat and I an iPad. After owning it for almost a week now… the device is pretty damn slick, and Kat sure seems to like Angry Birds HD. Flipboard is an amazing app, and Evernote is great. I look forward to seeing how it works out for travel as well as daily use of the next few weeks/months, so far seems like it will be easier than lugging around my MacBook Pro everywhere.

If you need to get Fink installed on your OS X 10.6 install you can follow these steps that I have gathered. You will need to compile Fink from source as they do not currently offer a 10.6 binary install.

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@fink.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/fink login
[just hit return when prompted for password]
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@fink.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/fink co -P fink
cd fink ; ./bootstrap /sw64

During the bootstrap process you will be prompted with two questions, make sure that you answer them as shown.

Fink must be installed and run with superuser (root) privileges. Fink can automatically try to become root when it’s
run from a user account. Since you’re currently running this script as a normal user, the method you choose will also
be used immediately for this script. Avaliable methods:
(1) Use sudo
(2) Use su
(3) None, fink must be run as root
Choose a method: [1]
Your hardware is a 64bit-compatible intel processor, so you have the option of running Fink in 64bit-only mode. This
is not recommended for most users, since many more packages are available for the default mode (which is mostly 32bit
but includes some 64bit packages). Which mode would you like to use?
(1) Default (mostly 32bit)
(2) 64bit-only
Choose a mode: [1] 2

Next you will need to edit the following config file /sw64/etc/fink.conf and change line 4 to look like this:

Trees: local/main stable/main stable/crypto unstable/main unstable/crypto

After that run the following command to get Fink all updated.

source /sw*/bin/init.sh
fink selfupdate-cvs
fink -y update-all
fink scanpackages

Then edit /sw64/etc/apt/sources.list and add the following sources as they are the best(only) ones I could find for 10.6

deb http://sage.ucsc.edu/fink_intel_10.6_64bit stable main crypto
deb http://sage.ucsc.edu/fink_intel_10.6_64bit unstable main crypto

Now your all set you can issue the following commands to update the source list and be on your way.

fink scanpackages
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

After getting the new Macbook Pro 13in, I quickly used up the 250gb of space that was on it. I then knew it was either I delete some files, or get a new hard drive. I opted to get a larger faster drive as I really hate deleting files. The install was a little more complicated then my previous Macbook…. Mainly just a few more screws to get the drive out. After the drive was replaced I booted off the OS X CD. I placed the old drive in an external case, towards the end of the install it allowed me to recover from another hard drive. I pointed the install to the external drive and it took about 2hrs but it restored all of my files.
I ran xBench before and after to see if there was any improvement going from a 5400RPM drive to a 7200RPM drive. Here are the results.

Over my birthday weekend Kat and I took a trip to San Francisco. While we were there we ended up playing with her sisters Macbook Pro. I had been feeling the bug to upgrade from my Macbook, but not having played with the Macbook Pro I couldn’t really justify it…. that was until after that weekend. After using it I knew that I needed to upgrade. So the day after we returned I decided it was birthday present time and I made a trip to the local apple store. Picked myself up a new Macbook Pro 13in (base model), and must say it was a good investment. Not to mention I gave my old Macbook to Kat so she can finally leave the Windows/Dell world she was accustom too.

I have been meaning to post this for sometime now but for some odd reason it has remained in my drafts folder. I picked up a Seagate 1tb FreeAgent USB Drive for my AppleTV around 6 months ago. I tried to format it to HFS and it kept giving me errors. After searching for a few I found the fix for this.

Open Disk Utility
Click on the Partition
Click on the Current Volume Scheme drop-down and select One Partition
Click on the options button and chose either the GUID Partition button or the Apple Partition Map button
Click OK, you can adjust the other options if you so desire
Click Apply, The partition screen should open
Click Partition

After that has completed it will unmount and remount. Upon remount Time Machine might ask you about using the drive for backups, I chose no. Hope this helps anyone that has format issues with their Seagate 1tb FreeAgent.

So I added a 40gb SATA drive to the machine and installed OSx86 to that. Once the install was complete the machine booted right up. The only issue is that the video driver was only allowing 800×600. Once I obtained the updated driver and did a reboot I was able to get 1280×1024. Everything was working great … So I decided to do an upgrade in hoped to not screw it up.
I updated to 10.5.6 with the Combo updater. After the install before I rebooted I reinstalled the Video Driver. When it rebooted the first time it got a kernel panic. I restarted again and passed -v -f to the boot options. It booted right up. After that I did one more reboot and it worked, and was very fast as well.
Once it was back up and running with 10.5.6 I did the software update and grabbed all of the avail updates. So far so good.
